Summer of the 2!

Hi Everyone!

The 2-Day hopes everyone is having a good week! As we transition into July, it's time for us to really gear up for some fun and exciting summer events. It's the "Summer of the 2!" - similar to the "Summer of George" for you Seinfeld fans - but actually for a good cause.

First, come register and train for the 2009 2-Day Walk at the Beat the Heat Training Walk on Sat., July 18, beginning at 8 a.m. We are partnering this year with Lenox Square and thought it would be fun to take everyone on a new route and bring you back to the mall just in time to eat in their food court and "Beat the Heat!" Walkers that register at the event will receive a $25 discount. Check in at 7:45 a.m. Please RSVP to 404.531.4111 or e-mail info@daywalk.org.

(That makes 3 training walks in July for you - two walks with orientations from the office and this special walk from Lenox Square Mall. Join us and bring at least two friends with you. Visit www.2daywalk.org to see details on the other training walks this summer.)

Then, something for all our foodies:

Hinton's Bin75 is going pink for the 2-Day with a fabulous wine tasting event. Expand your palette with new wines and light hors d'oeuvres on Sat. July 25 from 6 - 9 p.m. at Hinton’s Bin 75 Wine Bar, 8455 Holcomb Bridge Road, Alpharetta. The last event of the "Wines of Summer" series will be hosted by Chris Hinton, former Falcon's football player. Tickets are $25, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the 2-Day Walk. For reservation and more info, please call Hinton's at 770.641.1900.

And finally, for all the health minded Atlantans (or even those who have been putting off "that" health screening this year):

The Atlanta Health and Wellness EXPO, Atlanta's premier event highlighting nutrition, exercise, diabetes, heart health, genetic testing, and breast cancer, is Saturday, Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lenox Square, Buckhead. The event, which is free and open to the public, is presented by It’s The Journey, Inc., sponsored by Piedmont Hospital, and hosted by Lenox Square.

The EXPO will provide screenings for heart health, cholesterol, diabetes, glucose and breast cancer. Mobile mammography and blood donation will be available, beginning at 10 a.m. For those training for the Atlanta 2-Walk, a 10-mile training walk begins at 8 a.m., check in is at 7:30 a.m. This is the last chance to register for the 2009 Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, on Oct. 3-4. Interested in exhibiting? Contact Linda Schneider at lschneider@2daywalk.org or call 404-531-4111 ext. 207.

So there you have it! A veritable cornucopia of events this summer for the 2-Day. Mark your calendars and we'll see you there - hopefully in pink!

Do The 2 Walker Spotlight: Rochelle “Shelly” Bloom

Bloom Where You Are Planted: Shelly Bloom and Team Breastini Still Going Strong for Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer

By Lauren Godinez and Wendy Alpine

Shelly Bloom spreads her enthusiasm like a bee pollinating a flower. Wherever she goes, she leaves her mark. At age 61, she is an/the owner and designer of a glass company, a senior real estate consultant and budding comedienne who performs at assisted living facilities. She also is a dedicated volunteer, crew member and walker for the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer since it began in 2003.

She now walks for Team Breastini’s, which has over 20 members and also includes her daughter, Stacy Gardella, 36, as team captain.

Shelly, a resident of Hochston (near Lawrenceville), continues to walk because both her mother and sister were diagnosed with breast cancer. Her mother was diagnosed when she was 55 and passed away at 63, while her sister was diagnosed at age 36 and passed away at age 44, after also being diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Breastini’s will host the 4th Annual Lunch & Silent Auction benefiting the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer at Flemings Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, on Fri. Aug. 14 at 11:30 a.m. “I also ask members of my adult active community to support me,” she said. The team raised $25,000 last year and hopes to top $30,000 this year.

While she does attend the 2-Day’s annual kickoff 10-mile training walk, Shelly enjoys training on her own as well. She’s also keeping up with the 2-Day through its Facebook profile.

What’s her favorite part of the Walk? “I like that more money goes back to the local community and we walk through terrific neighborhoods – some that I was not even familiar with before,” Shelly said.

This year’s Walk will take place on Oct. 3-4 through Atlanta, with a lunch stop at beautiful Agnes Scott College. Come out this summer for the July 18 Beat the Heat training walk at Lenox Square and the Aug. 29 Atlanta Health and Wellness EXPO also at Lenox Square. For more information, call 404-531-4111 or visit www.2daywalk.org.
